چکیده

Scanning polarimetric W-band radar data were evaluated for the purpose of identifying predominant ice hydrometeor habits. Radar and accompanying cloud microphysical measurements were conducted during the Storm Peak Laboratory Cloud Property Validation Experiment held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, during the winter season of 2010/11. The observed ice hydrometeor habits ranged from pristine and rimed dendrites/ stellars to aggregates, irregulars, graupel, columns, plates, and particle mixtures. The slant 458 linear depolarization ratio (SLDR) trends as a function of the radar elevation angle are indicative of the predominant hydrometeor habit/shape. For planar particles, SLDR values increase from values close to the radar polarization cross coupling of about 221.8 dB at zenith viewing to maximum values at slant viewing. These maximum values depend on predominant aspect ratio and bulk density of hydrometeors and also show some sensitivity to particle characteristic size. The highest observed SLDRs were around 28 dB for pristine dendrites. Unlike planar-type hydrometeors, columnar-type particles did not exhibit pronounced depolarization trends as a function of viewing direction. A difference in measured SLDR values between zenith and slant viewing can be used to infer predominant aspect ratios of planar hydrometeors if an assumption about their bulk density is made. For columnar hydrometeors, SLDR offsets from the cross-coupling value are indicative of aspect ratios. Experimental data were analyzed for a number of events with prevalence of planartype hydrometeors and also for observations when columnar particles were the dominant species. A relatively simple spheroidal model and accompanying T-matrix calculations were able to approximate most radar depolarization changes with viewing angle observed for different hydrometeor types.

Detection of Ice Hydrometeor Alignment Using an Airborne W-band Polarimetric Radar

This paper presents airborne W-band polarimetric radar measurements at horizontal and vertical incidence on ice clouds using a 95-GHz radar on the University of Wyoming King Air research aircraft. Coincident, in situ measurements from probes on the King Air make it possible to interpret polarimetric results in terms of hydrometeor composition, phase, and orientation. One of the key polarimetric...

Cloud Microphysics Retrieval Using S-Band Dual-Polarization Radar Measurements

The recent deployment of multiparameter, polarimetric radars provides the impetus for development of microphysical retrievals. The primary objective of this paper is to describe a particle classification technique that makes use of polarimetric radar observations. The particle classification technique is computationally simple enough to be implemented for real-time research and operational fiel...

Interactive comment on “Cloud radar with hybrid mode towards estimation of shape and orientation of ice crystals” by A. Myagkov et al

The manuscript presents an interesting and important study of retrieval cloud particles’ characteristics from differential reflectivity (ZDR) and the correlation coefficient (CC) measured with polarimetric radar operating at a frequency of 35 GHz. Two measured radar variables allow retrieving the dielectric axis ratio and degree of orientation of cloud ice particles. The paper is a substantial ...

Retrieval of the thickness of undeformed sea ice from simulated C-band compact polarimetric SAR images

In this paper we introduce a parameter for the retrieval of the thickness of undeformed first-year sea ice that is specifically adapted to compact polarimetric (CP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The parameter is denoted as the “CP ratio”. In model simulations we investigated the sensitivity of the CP ratio to the dielectric constant, ice thickness, ice surface roughness, and radar inci...
